It is rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and Platinum on GuideStar. It was founded by Lt Col Dan Rooney, the only-ever F-16 fighter pilot (with three combat tours in Iraq) and PGA Professional. The mission of Hope Center for Children (HCFC) is to build stable, healthy families and to provide children a safe place from abuse and neglect. HCFC is the result of a 2013 merger between two organizations with histories of providing residential care for children in foster care, The Ellen Hines Smith Girls’ Home and the Children’s Shelter of the Upstate. These two strong organizations merged to form Hope Center for Children, resulting in a pooling of resources to provide a wider continuum of services for children and families in Spartanburg and the surrounding areas. This name captures the heart of each program: providing hope to children and families. Since the merger, HCFC has continued to expand services, and today six cohesive programs fulfill the mission. All six programs use evidence-based and/or evidence-informed models, yielding outstanding annual outcomes.
The Hispanic Alliance unites the largest network of agencies and individuals working collaboratively to advance Hispanic communities in the Upstate region. They build trust with Hispanic communities by speaking their languages, promoting their culture, and understanding and addressing their needs. They help their partner agencies serve the local Hispanic population in a culturally, linguistically and socially appropriate way.
PAL improves health and wellness throughout Spartanburg County by creating an environment and culture that fosters physical activity and healthy eating.
As part of their new strategic planning process, PAL renewed their commitment to active living, which they know relatively well. They will continue advocating for a community where activities like walking and bicycling are safe, easy, and convenient. In addition, they stated their intention to play a key role as advocates for accessible healthy, local food because physical activity and healthy eating are inextricably tied in chronic disease prevention. Finally, PAL will direct their activities so that they help close the gap on health inequities in their community. This has long been part of work and now they are including it in their mission: advance active living, promote healthy eating, foster health equity.
